| 1.Checking
side streets |
Just
before you reach the side street you must turn your head to the
left to make
sure no-one is coming out in front of you, the same applies to the
right.
This is also known as defensive driving tips, eg. being ready for
the unexpected.
Anything can happen and usually does if you are not prepared.

| 2.Blind
Spots |
One
of the most common fail items on a RTA test is NOT checking
over the shoulder before changing your position on the road. I have
a simple method, which has worked well for the last ten years, its
called MISM. You make the initial decision to move by the Mirrors,
then Indicate to show your intentions, check over your Shoulder
to see if the blind spot is empty or not, and if it is empty, then
quickly move over. When the driver looks over the right shoulder
into the middle of the backside window he/she is looking into the
middle of the blind spot.
I
tell my students whenever you move the car more than a metre to
the left or right you do a MISM, and if you do you won’t hit them.
The word MISM is a memory prompt for the student and saves time
for the instructor, this has worked for every student in the past.
After the student has been trained to do this three or four times,
it becomes second nature.
